The "Grieve 1907 "20 hp

... Heir to a Presbyterian family tradition related to Engineering and Mechanics, born in Lima in 1878
Juan Alberto Grieve. His grandfather, the Scottish engineer George Grieve arrived at Peru in the 1840's, hired for the construction of the railroad Tacna - Arica. His father John Chrysostom Engineer Downing Grieve had worked on the design and construction of Central Railway, the most important engineering work IXX century in Latin America.
While his grandfather and father were products of the Industrial Revolution, Alberto was a man of the twentieth century. Graduated with honors at age 20 as a mining engineer in 1898, his vocation took him to the Mechanical and Electrical. He had the gift of uniting academics with deep knowledge of the best manual dexterity Mechanical Workers, to which is added his knack for drawing, both mechanical and spatial and artistic. Alberto finished his studies began working at The Mint, chemical engineering, but also built three-phase electric motors of their own design. Get started the twentieth century to built a continuous current dynamo 5Kw with which lit up the currency.
diene and in 1905 built the first internal combustion engine aq continent heciendo a description of it in the bulletin of the Ministry of Public Works as a 4-stroke single cylinder engine, water cooled, capable of producing 5 CVA 1.500 RPM. The engine had an aluminum crankcase, cylinder, rings, piston and other components of cast iron. With improvements produced a large number of similar engines for water pumps, as well as electric generators. Subsequently underwent two-cylinder engine and then with one of four, consisting of two blocks of two cylinders with a common sigueñal.
in Lima in 1907 there were about twenty cars and engineer Grieve was the owner of an Oldsmobile Curved Dash, with a single cylinder engine of 4.5 hp., Two-speed transmission and a wooden body. It was the first car produced by volume in the world: A fabaricadas 10,000 units between 1902 and 1905. With this car Grieve took part in the first "raid" outside Lima, which joined Paseo Colon to La Punta in May 1907.
Last year, Grieve along with four other fans had founded the "Automobile Club", which brought a new sport enthusiasts. Besides working in the Mint, Grieve divided his time between the city of Lima, where he worked pro bono on issues of electrical, mechanical, trams and shoots, and giving lectures related to electricity and mechanics in the School of Engineers and the National School of Agriculture. Moreover, in his studio, the best equipped in Lima, experimented with machines, manufactured and produced their prototype motors, generators and water pumps. Grieve
decided in 1907 to design and manufacture your own car. At that time the few cars on Lima - French, Italian or American - had engines that produced less than 10 hp. Grieve considered making a car with a more powerful engine and 4 cylinders.
It developed an engine that had automatic valves, dual ignition, four spark plugs, magneto Sims Bosh lines. He made a four cylinder in line desaxiados in 18 mm. and a stroke of 110 mm., capable of producing 20 hp. A 1.800 rpm. Also developed a transmission comprising a gearbox 3 speed and reverse a leather cone clutch and shaft drive. The engine was cooling through a water cooler type honeycomb and thermosyphon system. The start was made by a crank.
The chassis was made of steel beams "L" in a ladder structure with all elements bolted. It had a wheelbase of 3 meters and both the front and rear track width of 1.30 m. It was equipped with wheels of 815 x 105 and inflatable tires Michelin. Had a braking system acting on the rear axle suspended by leaf spring.
The body, painted dark green, it was metal and could become a "Phaeton" of 5 seats in a "Roadster" ... Thanks

Heroes del Silencio - The Gunners Grieve. Canyon

the Gunners Grieve

As referred Basadre in San Juan and Miraflores fought with rifles and weapons caps oiled so badly that they had become "useless." But the situation has been worse if it had emerged the figure of John C. engineer Downing Grieve. This San Marcos, son of Scotland, had participated in the construction of the Oroya Railway, was 31 when he volunteered to repair and maintain the army's artillery. Then designed a breech-loading cannon (an advanced model for the time) and offered to ask the government made only a "small amount" for the tools. But the money never arrived, and Grieve funded all the work and when he ran out of money the National Club promoted a collection so he could finish his work. With railroad tracks and bronze working 7:00 to 22:00, seven days a week, managed to finish Grieve 42 guns and 10,400 bullets. He himself, with his workers, came to drive one of these devices in the defense of Lima. Consummate defeat in Miraflores, the Chileans captured the guns (except one who was buried and is now a relic of the army), and tested their effectiveness. So much so they wanted to take him to work for them. Grieve fled to Guayaquil and only returned to Peru at the end of the war. He was appointed head of the Mint until his death in 1905, was a consultant on issues of weapons. It is said that once the State wished to pay the debt, but given the poverty of the national treasury that was not possible.

Grieve Grieve

The Grieve was a gun barrel breech scratch built by John Grieve in Lima during the War of Guano in 1880 and Salitre. History

In 1879, the Minister of Finance Juan Químper John Grieve was commissioned to make cannons in Lima, during the government of Mariano Ignacio Prado. Grieve construction began asking steel shafts and a barrel train Bolivian Army to have him as a model.
Grieve made his gun at the School of Arts, but the streak did soul in the arsenal of the English railway.
The optional report of the Board appointed by the Secretary of War March 23, 1880 was supportive of the gun and asked Grieve manufactured which can be, because until that moment there was only one piece.

The coat of arms

The surname of GRIEVE is of two-fold origin. It was a baptismal name 'the son of Reeve'. This is a truly early Yorkshire surname. It also meant 'a govenor of a province', and came to mean an overseer, manager or head-workman on a farm, a farm bailif. Occupational surnames originally denoted the actual occupation followed by the individual. At what period they became hereditary is a difficult problem. Many of the occupation names were descriptive and could be varied. In the Middle Ages, at least among the Christian population, people did not usually pursue specialized occupations exclusively to the extent that we do today, and they would, in fact, turn their hand to any form of work that needed to be done, particularly in a large house or mansion, or on farms and smallholdings. In early documents, surnames often refer to the actual holder of an office, whether the church or state. Following the crusades in Europe in the 11th, 12th and 13th centuries, a need was felt for a family name to replace the one given at birth, or in addition to it. This was recognized by those of noble birth, and particularly by those who went on the Crusades, as it added prestige and practical advantage to their status. At first the coat of arms was a practical matter which served a function of the battlefield and in tournaments. With his helmet covering his face, and armour encasing the knight from head to foot, the only means of identification for his followers, was the insignia painted on his shield, and embroidered on his surcoat, the draped and flowing garment worn over the armour. Early records of the name mention Faroain Greva who was documented in 1050 in County Yorkshire, Johan Greve appears in 1199 in Warwickshire. Alicia Grayfdoghter of Yorkshire, was listed in the Yorkshire Poll Tax of 1379. Cuthbert Greveson of Yorkshire, registered at Oxford University in the year 1516. The name has many variant spellings which include Grayson, Gresson and Grason. The associated arms are recorded in Sir Bernard Burkes General Armory. Ulster King of Arms in 1884.
